Teacher guide MoneySmart: How much love can fit into a shoebox?

TLF ID M017870

This is a year 4 mathematics unit of work about preparing a 'shoebox of love', a gift-filled shoebox to be sent to a child in need. The unit is intended to take about 11 hours of teaching and learning time. It consists of an introduction, seven student activities and teacher notes on curriculum, pedagogy and assessment. Student activities include building a money fraction wall, using an empty number line to solve problems about giving change, comparing prices, ordering amounts of money, and describing their plan for filling their shoebox of love. The resource provides diagnostic, formative and summative assessment tasks; student worksheets; and links to websites, YouTube videos and digital resources.

Educational value
  • This resource is of value for the Number and Algebra and the Measurement and Geometry strands of the year 4 mathematics curriculum. Its context of preparing a shoebox of love is engaging and worthwhile. Its student activities are relevant for content descriptions and elements of the year 4 achievement standard that refer, directly or indirectly, to recognising common equivalent fractions in familiar contexts and making connections between fraction and decimal notations up to two decimal places, solving problems involving purchases and the calculation of change, and comparing objects using familiar metric units of area and volume.
  • The resource has considerable value for a number of the general capabilities, connecting with the organising elements of composing texts (literacy); estimating and calculating with whole numbers; using fractions, decimals, percentages, ratios and rates; using spatial reasoning (numeracy); creating with ICT (information and communication technology capability); social management (personal and social capability); and inquiring - identifying, exploring and organising information and ideas (critical and creative thinking).
  • The resource is also very useful for the National Consumer and Financial Literacy Framework. It supports learnings at band 4 in all three dimensions of the Framework. Learnings include identifying and prioritising different needs and wants, and recognising that different countries use different currencies (Knowledge and understanding dimension); using money to buy basic goods and services in 'real-life' contexts and ordering and discussing reasons for spending preferences (Competence); and explaining the role played by the voluntary sector in the community to help those in financial need (Responsibility and enterprise).
