# MoneySmart: Hey! Let's have a big day out!

This is a year 5 mathematics unit of work about costing and budgeting for various types of family outings. The unit is intended to take about 7.5 hours of teaching and learning time, and is recommended for near the end of the school year. It consists of an introduction, five sets of student activities, and teacher notes on curriculum, pedagogy and assessment. Student activities include building a class word wall, playing mathematical games, writing number sentences, considering spending decisions, and working out relative value. The resource provides diagnostic, formative and summative assessment tasks; student worksheets; and links to YouTube videos and digital resources.

• This resource is of value for the Number and Algebra strand of the year 5 mathematics curriculum. Its student activities, particularly its mathematical games, are engaging and relevant for content descriptions and elements of the year 5 achievement standard that refer, directly or indirectly, to using estimation and rounding to check the reasonableness of answers to calculations, solving problems involving multiplication of large numbers by one- or two-digit numbers using efficient strategies, and creating simple financial plans.
• This resource is also of considerable value for the year 5 economics and business curriculum. The resource's budgeting activities are relevant for almost every content description in both strands of the curriculum, especially the ones about the difference between needs and wants and why choices need to be made about the use of limited resources, and identifying alternative responses and considering the advantages and disadvantages of preferring one to others.
• The resource is useful for a number of the general capabilities, connecting with organising elements including word knowledge (literacy), estimating and calculating with whole numbers (numeracy), and inquiring - identifying, exploring and organising information and ideas (critical and creative thinking).
• The resource is also very useful for the National Consumer and Financial Literacy Framework. It supports learnings at band 6 in all three dimensions of the Framework. Learnings include recognising that families use household income to meet regular financial commitments and immediate and future expenses (Knowledge and understanding dimension), ordering and justifying reasons for spending preferences (Competence), and identifying and describing the impact that the consumer decisions of individuals may have on themselves and their families (Responsibility and enterprise).
