It consists of an introduction, seven sets of student activities, and teacher notes. The student activities include building a word wall, calculating percentages, completing and interpreting tables, calculating discounts, creating a column graph, working out enclosure areas, and using nets for a chicken coop. The resource also provides extension ideas, suggestions for assessment, net diagrams, student worksheets, and links to websites and YouTube videos.

Educational details

Educational value
  • This resource is of value for all three strands of the year 6 mathematics curriculum. Its theme and student activities are highly engaging. They are relevant for content descriptions and elements of the year 6 achievement standard that refer, directly or indirectly, to connecting equivalent fractions, decimals and percentages; calculating percentage discounts; solving problems involving the comparison of lengths and areas; and interpreting data displays, including side-by-side column graphs, and data in digital media.
  • The resource is useful for a number of general capabilities, connecting with many of the organising elements including word knowledge (literacy); estimating and calculating with whole numbers; using fractions, decimals, percentages, ratios and rates; using spatial reasoning; interpreting statistical information (numeracy); creating with ICT (information and communication technology capability); and inquiring - identifying, exploring and organising information and ideas (critical and creative thinking).
  • The resource is also very useful for the National Consumer and Financial Literacy Framework. It supports learnings at band 6 in all three dimensions of the Framework. Learnings include analysing the value of a range of goods and services in relation to an identified need (Knowledge and understanding dimension), evaluating the value of a range of goods and services in a variety of 'real-life' situations (Competence), and explaining that there are ethical considerations involved in some consumer and financial decisions and examining and discussing the external factors that influence consumer choices (Responsibility and enterprise).
