TLF ID M017872

This is a year 6 mathematics unit of work about keeping pets. The unit is intended to take about 12 hours of teaching and learning time, and is recommended for near the end of the school year. It consists of an introduction, seven sets of student activities, and teacher notes. The student activities include building a word wall, calculating percentages, completing and interpreting tables, calculating discounts, creating a column graph, working out enclosure areas, and using nets for a chicken coop. The resource also provides extension ideas, suggestions for assessment, net diagrams, student worksheets, and links to websites and YouTube videos.

Educational details

Educational value
  • This resource is of value for all three strands of the year 6 mathematics curriculum. Its theme and student activities are highly engaging. They are relevant for content descriptions and elements of the year 6 achievement standard that refer, directly or indirectly, to connecting equivalent fractions, decimals and percentages; calculating percentage discounts; solving problems involving the comparison of lengths and areas; and interpreting data displays, including side-by-side column graphs, and data in digital media.
  • The resource is useful for a number of general capabilities, connecting with many of the organising elements including word knowledge (literacy); estimating and calculating with whole numbers; using fractions, decimals, percentages, ratios and rates; using spatial reasoning; interpreting statistical information (numeracy); creating with ICT (information and communication technology capability); and inquiring - identifying, exploring and organising information and ideas (critical and creative thinking).
  • The resource is also very useful for the National Consumer and Financial Literacy Framework. It supports learnings at band 6 in all three dimensions of the Framework. Learnings include analysing the value of a range of goods and services in relation to an identified need (Knowledge and understanding dimension), evaluating the value of a range of goods and services in a variety of 'real-life' situations (Competence), and explaining that there are ethical considerations involved in some consumer and financial decisions and examining and discussing the external factors that influence consumer choices (Responsibility and enterprise).
