This is an activity about making choices to raise money for imaginary animals called gumbutangs. Their habitat is being eradicated and something must be done to save them. The user's first choice is between two websites, one a trusted one, the other a scam site. Then they are given choices about how to raise money for the gumbutangs and how to budget for, organise, publicise and price a fundraising event. These choices determine their pathway through the activity. Their final choice is how to spend the money they raised. The activity is intended for years 3 to 6 and takes about 30 minutes. Teacher and parent notes and a curriculum mapping are also available.

Educational value
  • This resource is of significant value for the mathematics curriculum in years 3 to 6 and the economics and business curriculum in year 6. In mathematics it is relevant for a range of content descriptions including those that refer to representing money values in multiple ways in year 3; solving problems involving purchases and using multiplication facts in year 4; using efficient strategies to solve problems, creating simple financial plans, and solving problems involving multiplication of large numbers in year 5; and multiplying decimals in year 6.
  • This resource is of value for the economics and business curriculum due to its support for the year 6 content descriptions in the Knowledge and Understanding and Skills strands. It provides a valuable introduction to the concept of opportunity costs; an engaging context for considering the effect that consumer and financial decisions can have on the individual, the broader community and the environment; and an opportunity for students to consider the advantages and disadvantages of various responses to an issue or event.
  • The resource is also very useful for the National Consumer and Financial Literacy Framework. It supports learnings at the years 4 and 6 bands in all three dimensions of the Framework. These include prioritising different needs and wants, and analysing the value of goods and services in relation to an identified need (Knowledge and understanding); creating simple budgets (Competence); and applying consumer and financial knowledge and skills in relevant school activities such as charity fundraising, and describing and practising safe, ethical and responsible behaviour in online and digital consumer and financial contexts (Responsibility and enterprise).
