This resource is a unit of work about disability awareness with a focus on the concept of inclusion. It includes an introductory page for teachers and 13 lesson plans. Each lesson has an overview, links to the Australian Curriculum, sequence of learning, activities and linked resources. Themes explored include: being informed, empathy, respect, celebrating difference, correct language, consideration of needs and ensuring inclusion. Educational value
  • This is a valuable resource for the year 3 and 4 Health and Physical Education curriculum. It is particularly relevant for the content description referring to how relationships can be positively influenced by valuing difference and using respect and empathy. All lessons within this resource include learning opportunties about respect, empathy and valuing difference. Lesson two The experience of disability, Lesson seven What we say is who we are, Lesson nine Everyone wants to communicate, and Lesson twelve My friendship story are particularly useful for this content description.
  • The resource is also useful for the content description referring to adopting inclusive practises when participating in physical activity. Lesson eleven Adapting to our needs provides students with an opportunity to consider, learn about and participate a modified physical activity to ensure a person with a disability can be included.
  • The resource is also useful for concepts in the General capabilities area of the year 4 curriculum, in particular the Personal and social capability and the Ethical understanding capability.
  • The resource is also useful for learning in the year 3 and 4 Civics and Citizenship curriculum. Particularly the content descriptions referring to working in groups to identify issues, planning solutions and taking action. Multiple lessons within the resource provide opportunity for students to work in groups and plan for action.
