This is a unit of work about disability rights, accessibility and liveability. It explores: liveable communities for diverse groups of people; assessing liveability of a local places for people with disabilities; disability rights and accessibility; and accessible transport services. The resource includes: an introduction; a focus, five lessons, learning outcomes, links to the Australian Curriculum, videos and resources. The resource is produced by the Australian Human Rights Commission.

Educational value
  • This is a very useful resource for the Place and liveability unit of study in the year 7 Geography curriculum. It is relevant for the content descriptions referring to: the decisions people make about where to live and their perceptions of the liveability of places; and the strategies used to enhance the liveability of places. Lessons 1, 2 and 3 are useful here, providing learning opportunities about liveability for diverse groups of people. Lesson 2 is particularly helpful as it involves learners in assessing the liveability of their local area from the perspective of a person with a disability. The resource is also useful for the content descriptions referring to: the influence of accessibility to services and facilities on the liveability of places; and the strategies used to enhance the liveability of places, especially for young people, Lesson 4 is useful here as it involves learners in assessing and improving the liveability of their school environment for people with disabilities. Lesson 5 is also relevant as it provides information about the accessibility of buses and trains for people with a disability.
  • This resource is useful in providing opportunities to explore the personal and social general capabilities area of the curriculum. This resource looks at the barriers that people with disabilities experience, with regards to the accessibility of places and the impact that this has, on the liveability of an area. The activities and lessons in the resource encourage student empathy and understanding about disability rights, the importance of acessibility in making a community liveable for different groups of people. Students will learn about the importance of the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) in protecting individuals from discrimination and promoting community awareness that people with disabilities have the same rights as all members of the community.
  • The resource may provide opportunities to explore Ethical understanding within the General capabilities area of the curriculum, particularly in relation to exploring values, rights and responsibilities in relation to disability rights.
