This is a unit of work about racism in the local community and in the world at large. It has four teaching and learning sequences that focus on: exploring and valuing diversity; identifying discrimination and harassment; using the law; analysing the impact of racism on individuals, families, friends and wider community; and being a voice for change by advocating against racism. The resource includes notes for teachers, assessment tasks and links to the Australian curriculum, video clips, texts and images.

Educational value
  • This is a very useful resource for the year 9 and 10 Health and Physical Education curriculum. It is particularly relevant for the content description referring to critquing behaviours and contextual factors that influence health and welbeing of the community. Sequence 3 The impact on individuals and communities has important information, stories and video clips about racist behaviour and how this can negatively impact the health and wellbeing of individuals and wider community.
  • The resource is also relevant for exploring the Ethical understanding and Intercultural understanding general capabilities as it explores values and rights and responsibilities of the community in relation to cultural diversity. Sequence 2 provides useful information about human rights in relation to discrimination and harrassment. Sequence 4 provides relevant information about the law and individual responsibiliy in relation to racism.
