This is a unit of work about 3D printing, the occupations that use 3D printing and the future of this technology. The resource includes: An introduction with teacher notes, student tasks, embedded videos and links to additional resources. Specific topics explored include: what is 3D printing; applications of 3D printing; 3D printing materials; How 3D printing will change our world; and ethical considerations of 3D printing. Educational value
  • This is a highly useful resource for the year 9 and 10 Science curriculum. It is particularly relevant for the content descriptions referring to how advances in science and technologies can significantly affect people's lives, including career opportunities. Task 2 and Task 4 of the resource are particularly relevant here as they provide information and learning activities about the range of objects being printed, the occupations the 3D printer influences and how 3D technology is developing and changing the world. The six videos embedded in Task 2 are also particularly useful.
  • The resource is also very useful for the year 9 and 10 Science curriculum, particularly the content descriptions referring to how science and technology advances rely on developments linked to each other. The section of the resource titled Task 4: How will 3D printing change our world? is relevant here, including relevant information about how 3D printing is changing the medical and manufacturing industries.
  • The resource is also very useful for the years 7 and 8 Science curriculum, particularly the content descriptions referring to ethical considerations that science and technology solutions present. The section of the resource titled Task 5: Ethical uses of 3D printing is very useful as it provides information and opportunity for students to consider the ethical use of 3D printing in a variety of situations that are presented as vignettes.
