This is a unit of work that uses the concept of rail safety and the setting of the rail network to explore character, roles and situations; there is a particular focus on bullying and the bystander effect. Learning opportunities for students include scripting, performing and revising their own drama. The resource includes: teacher notes, three learning experiences set out as lesson plans, three resources, teacher and student assessment and information for parents and carers.   • This is a highly useful resource for the year 7 and 8 The Arts Drama curriculum. It is relevant for at least six content descriptions. It is particularly relevant for the content description that refers to developing roles and characters consistent with situation, dramatic forms and performance styles to convey status, relationships and intention. Learning experience 1 of the resource engages students in activities to explore the bystander effect and develop the character of a bystander by identifying voice, body, movement and use of space on and around a rail network.
  • The resource is also very useful for the content descriptions referring to: devising and scripting drama to explore issues, ideas and themes; planning, structuring and rehearsing drama and exploring ways to communicate meaning; developing and refining expressive skills in voice and movement; and performing a devised and scripted drama. Learning experiences 2 and 3 of the resource engage students in writing a story and script about the bystander effect on or around the rail network. Students consider setting, the nature of the conflict, the crisis point and how the conflict is resolved. They review, revise and strengthen their performances.
  • The learning experiences within the resource are designed sequentially to enable students to explore, build on and demonstrate their knowledge of character, setting and communicating messages through the scripting and performance. Students also gain knowledge of safe behaviour on and around the rail network.
  • This resource is also extremely valuable for supporting the Victorian Curriculum for The Arts in years 7 and 8, it addresses all of the content descriptions within the Explore and Express Ideas, Drama Practices and Present and Perform strands. Students are challenged to examine the 'bystander effect' by planning and rehearsing a peer pressure or bullying situation. They then refine this to create a 60 second drama to play out this scenario and carefully analyse how the characters would feel. Finally they plan, rehearse and perform a response to the question 'To what extent are we personally responsible for what we see happening around us?'.
