Educational details

Educational value
  • This is a highly useful resource for the year 9 and 10 English curriculum. It is relevant for more than ten content descriptions across these year levels. It is highly relevant for the year 9 content descriptions referring to: how evaluation can be expressed directly and indirectly using different devices; analysing the use of symbols and icons to augment meaning; and analysing and comparing text structures. Learning experience 1 explores how evaluative language devices, and persuasive written and visual techniques are used to communicate messages. Students also deconstruct a visual or multimodal text to examine techniques and features.
  • The resource is also very useful for the year 9 and 10 content descriptions that refer to the creation, review and edit of imaginative, informative and persuasive texts that present a point of view. Learning experience 3 is particularly useful as it involves students in creating a campaign to create awareness about safety on and around the rail network. This includes creation of visual or multimodal texts that use evaluative language devices and a persuasive text that justifies a claim. The Top nine influencers table is also particularly useful for students to review and edit their own texts.
  • The learning experiences within the resource are designed sequentially to enable students to explore, build on and demonstrate their knowledge of using language devices, structure and features to augment meaning when creating, reviewing and editing their own texts, including visual and multimodal texts.
  • This resource is also extremely valuable for supporting the Victorian Curriculum for years 9 and 10 English, particularly many of the content descriptions within the Language and Literacy strands. Students are scaffolded to develop their own rail safety campaign, a complex informative multimodal text for a specific audience that uses persuasive devices and action messages that will appeal to the chosen group.
