This is a unit of work about how to be a safe, active and responsible citizen on and around the rail network. The resource focuses on identifying: hazards, pedestrian and crowd behaviour, emotions, bullying and peer pressure that impact on the decisions young people make. It includes: teacher notes, three learning experiences, a resource, teacher and student assessment and information for parents and carers. The resource includes a number of links to videos and websites that act as prompts for learning. The unit of work can be accessed from the website or downloaded as a complete set.

  • This is a highly useful resource for the year 9 and 10 Health and Physical Education curriculum. It is relevant for at least six content descriptions. It is particularly relevant for the content descriptions referring to: situations where external influences may impact on making healthy and safe choices; and evaluating situations, emotional responses and considering the different outcomes that may occur. Learning experiences 1 and 2 of the resource engage students in examining pedestrian and crowd behaviour, identifying hazards and explaining how emotions, peer pressure and bullying can affect decision making on and around the rail network.
  • The resource is also very useful for the content description referring to planning, implementing and critiquing strategies to enhance the health, safety and wellbeing of communities. Learning Experience 3 of the resource is very useful for this content description. Students explore how to manage peer pressure and bullying by creating a children's story script and videos titled 'Even if your friends don't think it is cool'.
  • The learning experiences within the resource are designed sequentially to enable students to build on and demonstrate their knowledge of: rail safety; factors that influence decisions such as bullying, peer pressure and emotions; and strategies to ensure safe behaviour for themselves and their community.
  • This resource is also extremely valuable for supporting the Victorian Curriculum for years 9 and 10 Health and Physical Education, particularly content descriptions within the Personal, Social and Community Health strands. Students are engaged in investigating the way people move around the rail network and identifying possible safety issues, they then examine how peer pressure to act in unsafe ways can arise, with particular refence to how people feel when pressured to act in unsafe ways and then create a video or animation to promote safe behaviours around rail for their local community.
