This is a curated collection of articles, photographs and internet links related to natural, technological and human-caused events including bushfires, cyclones, tsunamis, earthquakes, shipwrecks, urban fires, chemical and industrial events in Australia. Events included have posed a serious threat to a community or property and include recent and historical events from all Australian states and territories and some international locations (where they have significant imapct on Australia). The images are organised in a database to browse or to search via category, region and date. Most of the images can be downloaded and used freely by students and teachers. The quality and variety of information makes this archive a very useful collection of primary source materials for issues based studies. Where available, users can hyperlink to the original source of the images for more background information.

Educational value
  • This vast archive provides a broad range of topics useful as primary sources to support inquiries in geography, and science of natural, technological and human-caused events. The resources will be particularly relevant in topics associated with the impacts on people and settlements as many images capture the after effects of the event in years 6 and 8 Geography.
  • The visually descriptive nature of the images included in the image galleries make them excellent candidates for use with primary students to use for locating and interpreting information on topics related to disasters.
  • The availability of historical and contemporary information provide a very useful tool for making comparisons of similar events on a place and for creating illustrated chronologies required in the history skills strand of the Australian Curriculum.
