Educational value
  • This is a very useful resource for the year 5 Economics and Business curriculum. It is particularly relevant for the content description that refers to making choices when there are limited resources and the difference between needs and wants. Work task 1 of the resource engages students in defining a want and a need. It also involves students in making decsions about wants and needs for different people who have different roles, situations or interests.
  • The resource is also relevant for the year 5 content description that refers to influences on consumer choices and methods that can be used to help make informed choices. Work task 2 involves students in a game where they play the role of a fisherman and have to purchase necessary items to make a living. Reflection after each game allows students to see how circumstances of the game and choices they made affected the outcome. Students also consider how the outcome could have been different or improved.
  • Work task 2 of the resource may have some relevance for the Mathematics curriculum, particularly for number and place value. In work task 2 of the resource, students use addition and subtraction up to 1000.
