This is a video about farmer and cheesemaker Diane Rae and how she and her children established a sheep dairy agribusiness. It shows scenes of Grandvewe farm and cheesery as she speaks of how they learnt to be sheep farmers; researched dairy sheep overseas; and changed production systems as a result of experience. She tells of the importance of creating an end product, not just growing a commodity, as the key to agribusiness success. The video lasts for 3:23 min and in the second half Rae gives detailed advice to young people wanting to establish an agribusiness.

Educational details

Educational value
  • This resource is very useful for studies of Agriculture and Agribusiness in 21st century Australia, particularly in the context of subjects such as economics and business; design and technologies; and work studies. In economics and business, Diane Rae's emphasis on creating an agribusiness selling end products, such as sheep cheeses and farm visits, is relevant to the year 10 content description about how ways businesses organise themselves to improve productivity. Her account of how the business was established and operates provides a good example for the year 7 content description about the characteristics of entrepreneurs and successful businesses, and for the year 8 description about the types of businesses in Australia and how they respond to opportunities.
  • In the years 7/8 Design and Technologies curriculum the video supports content descriptions in the Knowledge and understanding strand that refer firstly to the ways in which products evolve locally and regionally through the creativity, innovation and enterprise of individuals (such as Rae and her family) and secondly to sustainable ways of producing food in managed environments.
  • The resource is also useful for the year 9 work studies curriculum. It is relevant to the content description about identifying types of entrepreneurial behaviours and their opportunities for application to 21st century enterprise. Rae provides an excellent summary of how to harness entrepreneurial behaviours and research opportunities and costs in order to establish a business enterprise. The video also has value for another year 9 content description about investigating a wide range of occupations, and the skills and personal qualities required in these fields.
