TLF ID M019340

This is a teacher resource containing a sequence of activities relating to meat and wool production in Australia. It contains material to assist planning and implementing a study of where farmers live, where our meat and wool comes from, technologies used in production and resource management, and how farm environment and practices affect production. Educational value
  • This a highly valuable resource for content descriptions in years 5 and 6 Design and Technologies curriculum. It is particularly relevant for looking at technologies used in the production of food and fibre including digital technologies like computer equipment, radio communications, and modern machinery. It is also supports teaching about the 'paddock to plate' supply chain including stages in the production of familiar food items; as well as the selection of stock breeds, like cattle and sheep, based on their environmental suitability. It is also valuable for investigating a range of materials, systems, tools and equipment used in agricultural production.
  • This resource is of great value for the Sustainability cross-curriculum priority, particularly for teaching about how sustainable food and fibre production relies on the interdependence of healthy social, economic and ecological systems. It is also supports teaching about sustainable futures and for designing action for sustainability that are based on an understanding of environments and reflect values of care and responsiblitiy. This resource supports a consideration of scenarios that fall into 'probable', 'possible', and 'preferable' futures in relation to sustainable food sources for the future.
  • This resource is of significant value for year 5 Geography content descriptions. It is particularly relevant for teaching about the influence of the environment on people, specifically climatic conditions and how people involved in agricultural production respond to and manage seasonal weather patterns and climate in different parts of Australia. In the Geographical Inquiry and Skills strand, it supports the collection, recording, evaluating and representing of geographical data and information particularly spatial maps and climate graphs. It also includes suggestions for student presentations; and for encouraging students to assess ways of enhancing future sustainability.
  • This is a valuable resource for the literacy and numeracy general capabilities. There are many tasks and activities that support the teaching of food and fibre language and concepts including word association tasks and vocabulary lists. The teaching of numeracy is supported through research tasks involving the interpretation and creation of maps associated with the virtual farms; and the interpretation of climate graphs.
