Educational details

Educational value
  • This is an excellent resource for the 'Biomes and food security' unit of study in the year 9 Geography curriculum. In addition to serving as a valuable and motivating introduction for the unit as a whole, the video is particularly relevant to the specific content description in the Knowledge and understanding strand that refers to the capacity of the world's environments to sustainably feed the projected future population to achieve food security for Australia and the world.
  • As well as being pedagogically sound, the three discussion breaks in the video provide opportunities for students to enhance their capacity for geographical inquiry, particularly in relation to the content description that calls for year 9 students to develop geographically significant questions and plan inquiries. The discussion questions posed in the video are good examples of geographically significant questions.
  • The video may also have value as an introduction to aspects of the years 9/10 design and technologies curriculum, particularly those requiring the critical analysis of factors, including social, ethical and sustainability considerations, that impact on designed solutions for global preferred futures, in this case global food security.
