This is a resource that uses the topic of air to explore intellectual property, in particular patents. The resource includes: exploration into the properties of air; opportunity to devise and carry out experiments involving air; and the ability to claim mock credit for a discovery or invention by taking out a pretend patent. Sections of the resource include: an overview, learning objectives, delivery advice, four worksheets and procedural advice.

Educational value
  • This is a useful resource for the year 4, 5 and 6 Science curriculum. It relates to the content descriptions that refer to: force being exerted by direct contact or from a distance; the different observable properties of solids, liquids and gases; and planning an investigation to solve problems. Worksheet 1 of the resource is highly relevant as it involves exploring the properties of air. Worksheet 2 is also very useful as it guides students to develop their own experiment to prove the properties of air.
  • The resource is also useful for the year 8 Economics and Business curriculum, in particular the content description that refers to the rights and responsibilities of consumers and businesses in Australia. The section of the resource that involves students in applying a mock patent to their invention is relevant here.
  • The resource may also be relevant to the Ethical Understanding cross-curriculum priority. In particular the Understanding ethical concepts and issues and Exploring values, rights and responsibilities organising elements. Information provided about the importance and process of applying for a patent may be useful here.
