This is a website about how the treatment and mainstream understanding of deaf and blind people has changed overtime. The resource has three sections: Introductory information; Story Objects; and Story Education Resources. There are 16 Story Objects that tell the stories of individuals, events and artefacts of deaf and blind communities and two Story Education Resources that link to learning activities. The resource includes links, images, videos and photos with informative captions.

Educational value
  • This is a useful resource for the Making a better world Depth study in the year 9 History curriculum. It is relevant for the content descriptions that refer to: the experiences of men, women and children during the Industrial Revolution; and the emergence and nature of key ideas before and around 1900. A number of Story Objects provide relevant information and perspectives including: Flinders Street Deaf Club, Perkins Brailler, Assistive Technology and Blackburn Lake Park.
  • The resource is also relevant for the Rights and Freedom Depth study in the year 10 History curriculum. It is relevant for the content descriptions that refer to: the continuity and change in beliefs and values that have influenced the Australian way of life; and origins of the Universal Declaration of human rights. A number of Story Objects are relevant here including: Eyes on access, Flinders Street Deaf Club, Perkins Brailler, Assistive Technology and Blackburn Lake Park. The two Story Education Resources – Deaf Perspectives and Blind Perspectives- also provide relevant learning activities for these content descriptions.
  • The resource is also relevant for the year 7 Civics and Citizenship curriculum. In particular the content description that refers to how values, including freedom, respect, inclusion, civility, responsibility, compassion, equality and a ‘fair go’ promote cohesion within the Australian society. The four videos in the Story Objects section of the resource titled: Deafhood; In a Hearing Worlds; Hidden from Sight; and In a Seeing World are useful. They reveal experiences of deaf and blind people, provide information about organisations that support deaf or blind people and detail historical societal changes experienced by deaf and blind people.
  • The resource may also be relevant for the Ethical Understanding General capability, in particular the Exploring values, rights and responsibilities Organising Element.
