This is a website about William Buckley, an infamous convict that arrived in Victoria from England in 1803 and escaped European settlement. The resource presents: Buckley’s life after he escaped from settlement: details of the 32 years he spent with the Wathaurang people: and depicts his meeting with the colonising party, including John Batman, in 1835. The resource has three sections: Introductory information; 15 Story Objects; and two Story Education Resources. It includes links, images, videos and photos with informative captions.

Educational value
  • The resource is very useful for two of the Depth studies in the year 9 History curriculum. The Story Objects titled William Buckley, the Wild White Man, and Buckley's Chance provide relevant information for the Australia and Asia Depth study particularly the content descriptions that refer to the extension of settlement, including the effects of contact between European settlers and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. The same Story Objects are also useful for the Making a better world? Depth study in particular the content descriptions that refer to: the experiences of slaves, convicts and free settlers upon departure, their journey abroad, and their reactions on arrival.
  • The resource also has relevance for the year 9 History curriculum content description that refers to the nature and extent of the movement of peoples in the period 1750 to 1918. A number of Story Objects are useful here including: The first settlers discover Buckley; Batman’s first meeting with Buckley; and Government Residence, Melbourne 1837.
  • The resource is also relevant for the year 5 History curriculum, in particular the content description that refers to the role that a significant individual or group played in shaping a colony.
