This is a wide-ranging set of resources about the fair trade initiatives of the world-wide development agency Oxfam. The resources include eight frequently asked questions about fair trade; an article entitled 'What’s wrong with world trade?'; a 7 min video and a poster tracing fair trade coffee from Papua New Guinea and Timor Leste respectively to Australia; three visual resources about Oxfam's produce partners - Woza Moya in South Africa, Wakami in Guatemala and Mahaguthi in Nepal; written stories from Manduvirá in Paraguay and José in the Dominican Republic; an infographic about the Saqil Group System; a 3things Fairtrade action guide and student blogs featuring small, medium and big actions; and recipes using fair trade chocolate and coffee

Educational value
  • This is an outstanding resource for studies of fair trade in the geography and economics and business curriculums. It provides highly relevant visual, audio and written materials to support fair trade case studies in the years 9 and 10 geography units of work 'Geographies of interconnections' and ' Geographies of human wellbeing'. The resource is particularly important for content descriptions that focus on studies in Africa, South America and the Asian region, such as those about issues affecting the development of places and their impact on human wellbeing, drawing on a study from a developing country or region in Africa or South America and reasons for and consequences of spatial variations in human wellbeing on a regional scale within a country of the Asia region. Oxfam's role in fair trade is also of value for the year 10 content description about the role of international non-government organisations' initiatives in improving human wellbeing.
  • The resource is also very useful for economics and business in years 9 and 10. The frequently asked questions, the videos and the article 'What's wrong with world trade?' are supportive of content descriptions that refer to why and how participants in the global economy are dependent on each other (year 9) and the links between economic performance and living standards, the variations that exist within and between economies, and the possible causes (year 10).
  • This is a significant set of resources for the Sustainability cross-curriculum priority. They contribute to students' understanding of the priority's organising idea that refers to the sustainability of social and economic systems being achieved through informed individual and community action that values local and global equity and fairness
