Video CERES Environment Park

TLF ID M019857

This is a video about the sustainable not-for-profit agribusiness operated by the Centre for Education and Research in Environmental Strategies (CERES) in inner Melbourne. CERES Environment Park runs an organic farm, fruit and vegetable delivery business, and delivers educational programs to schools. Presented by the CERES managers, the video includes footage of the farm, organic shop, and team members and gives an overall picture of the environmental park and its social enterprise programs, focusing on the growth of the delivery business and the aims of the education program. The video also describes the importance of the centre's organic farm, the advantages of organic farming for health and the environment, and how CERES has helped students and teachers embed environmental education in the curriculum and include a fruit and vegetable garden as a normal part of school life. The video runs for 2:17min and ends with six discussion points for students.

Educational details

Educational value
  • This is an excellent resource for studies of not-for-profit social enterprises in the economics and business curriculum and of ethical and sustainable systems of food production and marketing in the design and technologies curriculum. The video also has relevance for the Sustainability cross-curriculum priority, particularly for its organising ideas that emphasise futures.
  • The diversity and ethical foundations of CERES' multiple enterprises (including its nursery, farm, fruit and vegetable boxes, shop, kitchen, cafe, and programs providing vocational training, sustainability education and staff development) serve as valuable case studies for economics and business content descriptions in years 6, 7, 8 and 10. These refer to the reasons businesses exist and the different ways they provide goods and services (year 6); the characteristics of successful businesses (year 7); the types of businesses and the ways they respond to opportunities in Australia (year 8); and ways businesses organise themselves to improve productivity (year 10).
  • The video also provides a very useful introduction to the content description in the years 9 and 10 design and technologies curriculum about investigating and making judgments on the ethical and sustainable production and marketing of food. Ceres's food production is centred on a 4.5ha urban organic farm connected to a state-wide network of suppliers of organic produce. In addition, its marketing system of organic fruit and vegetable deliveries provides an interesting case study for the content description, also in years 9 and 10, about how products, services and environments evolve with consideration of preferred futures.
