Learning objects Mystery at Rookwood

TLF ID M019936

Mystery at Rookwood explores aspects of Chinese migration to Australia in the nineteenth century. In a game approach, students have to assist the 'ghost' of colonial entrepreneur Quong Tart in discovering his true identity. To do this, they examine a series of primary and secondary sources across six topics before attempting a number of quizzes.

Educational value
  • Mystery at Rookwood is an excellent resource for the study of a significant individual (Quong Tart) and the role he played in shaping a colony. It is also useful for looking at the reasons people migrated to Australia from Asia, and the experiences and contributions of a particular migrant group (the Chinese) within a colony. The resource is a good example of game-based learning.
