Teacher guide Bringing Military Science to Life: STEM careers

TLF ID M019938

This is a unit of work about military science, the occupations that use military science and the future and ethics of this technology. This resource aims to have students think about the people who work in military science (who they are and what it is they do); and to begin to consider the purpose of military science (that is, its contribution to both Australia’s ability to defend and protect itself and its allies, as well as providing disaster relief and other humanitarian assistance to Australians’ and our allies). The resource includes: An introduction with teacher notes, student tasks, embedded videos and links to additional resources. Specific topics explored include: the role of military science and Australia’s Defence Forces generally; military equipment and technology; ethics of robot soldiers. This resource is a career resource written for both classroom teachers and career counsellors.

Educational value
  • This is a highly useful resource for the year 7 and 8 Science curriculum. It is particularly useful for the content descriptions referring to the way people use understanding and skills from across the disciplines of science in their occupations; Task 5: Meet military science engineers is particularly relevant to this as it includes four videos of interviews with scientists and engineers discussing their work, with associated student tasks.
  • The resource is also very useful for the year 7 and 8 Science curriculum, particularly the content description referring to ethical considerations that science and technology solutions present. Robot soldiers - ethical discussion (Task 4) is particularly relevant here and provides an opportunity for students to consider the use of robot soldiers in modern warfare.
  • This is a very valuable source of information for the year 9 and 10 Work Studies curriculum particularly for the sub-strand career development and life design.
