This series of resources explores the concept of philanthropy, and considers why and how active citizens participate in communities. Through a series of video case studies students are introduced to a variety of people who give and the contributions they make. An interactive 'Giving Wheel' provide a stimulus for researching the different forms of giving from social enterprises and charities to individuals who simply help others in need. A teacher guide, maps the toptic to the Australian Curriculum.

Educational value
  • This resource introduces students to the values of fairness, care and compassion that underpin a civil society. The activities and case studies assist students to explore the motivations of different people who contribute to their community. It is a valuable resource for exploring the Citizenship, diversity and identity aspects of the Civics and Citizenship curriculum for Years 3 to 6 and supports students to reflect on and communicate their ideas and viewpoints.
  • The resources also support exploration of the general capabilities of personal and social capability and ethical understandings.
  • Some activities offer opportunities to link to aspects of the Business and Economics curriculum for Year 5.
