Video Growing exotic fruit - a niche market enterprise

TLF ID M020300

This is a video(3:15 min) about John and Lyndall Piccone’s exotic fruit orchard at Tyagarah in New South Wales. The resource describes how the property produces more than 200 different tropical and sub-tropical fruits with the harvest beginning in early spring. Successive harvests serve to maintain customer interest in the fruits. Piccone explains that the produce is marketed locally at farmers markets and to specialist chefs. He shows how biosecurity is achieved through a fruit fly exclusion netted enclosure and displays his innovative way of allowing bees to pollinate fruit flowers within the enclosure.

Educational details

Educational value
  • This excellent resource is very useful for studies of agriculture and agribusiness in 21st century Australia, particularly in the context of subjects such as economics and business, work studies, and design and technologies particularly in relation to how small business owners are responsive to market needs.
  • John Piccone's discussion of the family business is of considerable value for the economics and business curriculum, particularly for the year 8 content description about the types of businesses in Australia and how they respond to opportunities. The discussion clearly reveals his passion for all fruit and his capacity for innovation and as such, it is also relevant to the year 7 content description about the characteristics of entrepreneurs and successful businesses and the year 10 content description about how ways small businesses organise themselves to improve productivity.
  • In the years 7 and 8 design and technologies curriculum the video supports the content description in the Knowledge and understanding strand that refers to producing food sustainably in managed environments.
  • The resource may also be useful for year 9 work studies, supporting the content description about investigating a wide range of occupations and the skills and personal qualities required in these fields. It is equally relevant to the content description about identifying types of entrepreneurial behaviours and their opportunities for application to 21st century enterprise. It might also provide an interesting exemplar for an action project utilising entrepreneurial behaviours to address an identified challenge or opportunity.
