This is a video (4:15 min) about how the Stewart family is regenerating their family farm, Yan Yan Gurt West, in south-western Victoria. Presented by family members, the resource describes how the land was over-cleared in the past and its hydrology or water resources were compromised when swamps were drained. The regeneration strategy for the farm is then illustrated: five land classes have been identified, fenced and revegetated along the boundaries; a web of trees have been grown; and alpacas have been added as guard animals for the sheep and lambs. Andrew and Kristy explain the family’s aims in terms of environmental sustainability, economic sustainability and social/aesthetic sustainability. The video concludes with a description of the sustainability value of the cob studio being built on the property.

  • This is a highly valuable resource for the design and technologies curriculum in years 7 and 8 and 9 and 10. It provides an exemplar of a carefully planned farm regeneration that is highly relevant to content descriptions referring to investigating the ways in which environments evolve locally and how competing factors including social, ethical and sustainability considerations are prioritised in the development of solutions for preferred futures in years 7 and 8 and explaining how environments evolve with consideration of preferred futures on design decisions in years 9 and 10.
  • Yan Yan Gurt West Farm provides an excellent case study for the years 9 and 10 content description about investigating and making judgments on the ethical and sustainable production of food and fibre. The low impact farming system implemented on the farm focuses on the sustainable production of first-cross ewes for wool and prime lambs for meat.
  • The video is particularly valuable for the Sustainability cross-curriculum priority in studies of agriculture. It exemplifies seven of the priority's nine organising ideas. These include the ideas that designing action for sustainability requires an evaluation of past practices, the assessment of scientific and technological developments, and balanced judgements based on projected future economic, social and environmental impact and that sustainable futures result from actions designed to preserve and/or restore the quality and uniqueness of environments.
