This is a video about bees and their importance for Australian agricultural production. Intended for mid-primary students, the video is presented by Trevor Weatherhead of the Australian Honey Bee Industry Council. He describes how numerous plants, such as the pumpkin crops seen in the video, are dependent on bees for pollination. He also explains how and when European honey bees were introduced into Australia, and he distinguishes between social and solitary bees. Opening a bee box to reveal the frames, Weatherhead shows how a managed hive is organised and outlines how worker bees collect nectar and pollen, how honey is made from nectar and how it is removed from the frames. The video is 3:54 mins in length and concludes with a discussion of the threat posed by the Varroa mite.

Educational value
  • This video is an excellent resource for studies of agriculture within the science and design and technologies curriculums in years 3 to 6. As a science resource, the video provides information about the social structure of a bee colony, how long it takes each type of bee (queen, worker and drone) to hatch, and how worker bees bring about plant pollination. This is particularly relevant for the Year 4 content description that living things have life cycles.
  • As a design and technologies resource, the video demonstrates and describes the workings of a managed bee colony. This strongly supports content descriptions in years 3 and 4 that refer to food production in modern societies. It also supports content descriptions in years 5 and 6 that refer to how and why food is produced in managed environments and prepared to enable people to grow and be healthy.
  • The resource is very likely to appeal to its intended primary-aged audience. Its visuals are excellent, the commentary straightforward and helpful, and its language level appropriate to the student audience. The key messages are well-crafted and memorable, especially the point that one in every three mouthfuls of food is dependent on honey bee pollination.
