Sustainable Agriculture- Water management

• This is a highly valuable resource for the 'Water and the world' unit in the geography and humanities and social sciences (HASS) curriculums in year 7. It is particularly supportive of content descriptions that refer to the economic value of water for people and to the way that flows of water connect places as it moves through the environment and the way this affects places.
• The student activities in the unit are useful for the Inquiry and Skills strand in the year 7 Geography and HASS curriculums. The first three activities are relevant for the corresponding content descriptions: interpret geographical data and other information using qualitative and quantitative methods, and digital and spatial technologies as appropriate, to identify and propose explanations for spatial distributions, patterns and trends, and infer relationships in geography and interpreting and analysing data and information displayed in a range of formats to identify and proposing explanations for distributions, patterns, trends and relationships in HASS. The final activity supports content descriptions in both curriculum areas about communicating findings.
• The activities are also relevent for the Year 7 science curriculum as it relates to understanding of the importance of water management to maintenance of natural water cycles and the consequences of poor management.
• The unit of work supports a number of organising ideas in the Sustainability cross-curriculum priority that can be incorporated in the geography and HASS curriculums. These include the ideas that designing action for sustainability requires an evaluation of past practices, the assessment of scientific and technological developments, and balanced judgements based on projected future economic, social and environmental impact and that sustainable futures result from actions designed to preserve and/or restore the quality and uniqueness of environments.
