Teacher guide Biosecurity

TLF ID M020820

This is a unit of work about the biosecurity of Australia’s agriculture. The unit focuses on how introduced species can affect the balance of ecosystems. The major activities in this unit focus on the concept of interdependence in ecosystems; the importance of biosecurity and control of outbreaks. A simple experiment models the testing of typical objects bought in through airports and illustrates the steps taken to protect Australian borders while a case study of Panama disease in bananas demonstrates the impact of disease on agribusiness. The unit also provides background information, experiment preparation notes, pedagogical advice and a list of online resources for teachers and detailed assignment sheets for students.

Educational details

Educational value
  • This is an excellent resource for studies of agriculture within the year 9 science curriculum. It is highly relevant to content descriptions in the understanding and inquiry skills strands. In relation to the Science Understanding strand, almost the whole unit of work relies on and supports the Biological sciences content description referring to ecosystems consisting of communities of interdependent organisms and abiotic components of the environment; matter and energy flowing through these systems.
  • The unit offers an opportunity for an integrated approach between science and geography in relation to biosecurity. The year 9 geography unit 'Biomes and food security' contains a content description for which this resource is particularly relevant. It refers to challenges to food production for Australia and other areas of the world.
