Teacher guide reSolve: Probability

TLF ID M021056

This sequence of four lessons explores probability in real world situations including advertising, games and population sampling. Students calculate probabilities, represent probabilities as fractions, decimals and percentages, perform chance experiments with small and large sample sizes and graph their results, examine the language of probability including the concept of 'luck', and learn about population sampling by conducting their own sampling experiments. Each lesson is outlined in detail including curriculum links, vocabulary, materials needed, sample answers, discussion points and student resources such as spreadsheets. This sequence is part of the reSolve: Maths by Inquiry program.

Educational details

Educational value
  • This resource is valuable for supporting the Statistics and Probability strand of year 7 mathematics. It relates to the content description about describing probabilities using fractions, decimals and percentages. There are various activities during the lesson where students are asked to express probabilities in multiple fractional representations.
  • The resource is also extremely valuable for the content description about conducting chance experiments. In particular, three of the lessons invite students to conduct chance experiments with varying sized data samples and to compare and interpret their results.
  • The resource also supports the content description about observed and expected frequencies from chance experiments. There are multiple activities that engage students in chance experiments and challenge students to explain the difference between observed and expected frequencies, especially with smaller data sizes.
  • The resource is also valuable for supporting the general capabilities of Numeracy, Literacy and Information and Communication Technologies. The lessons provide multiple authentic opportunities for students to interpret statistical information, engage in discipline-specific word knowledge, and investigate data using technologies.
