Teacher guide reSolve: Reconciliation data

This lesson prompts students to examine data from the Reconciliation Barometer report, collect their own local data and compare with the national findings. Students discuss the meaning of reconciliation, explore statements from Reconciliation Barometer report, design a survey to collect local data relating to the statements from the report, graph their data, interpret their findings and compare their results to national data. The lesson is outlined in detail including curriculum links, a supporting PowerPoint presentation, links to data and videos, discussion points and student resources. This sequence is part of the reSolve: Maths by Inquiry program.

  • This resource is valuable for supporting the Statistics and Probability strand of year 7 mathematics. It relates to the content description about interpreting data displays as students are asked to create and interpret their own side by side column graphs for two variables.
  • The resource is also useful for the content description about making connections between equivalent fractions, decimals and percentages as students are asked to present their survey data as percentages of collected responses, requiring them to convert between representations.
  • The resource is also quite useful for the content description about interpreting secondary data presented in the media, as students engage with the data presented in the Reconciliation Barometer report and relate it to their own beliefs about reconciliation and racism in Australia.
  • The resource is also valuable for supporting the Numeracy general capability as the lesson provides authentic opportunities for students to interpret statistical information particularly tables and column graphs.
  • The resource provides opportunities to explore the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Histories and Cultures' cross-curriculum priority as it relates to the diversity of nations and the significant contributions of Aboriginal Peoples and Torres Strait Islander Peoples.
