This sequence of two lessons explores early algebraic thinking around the concept of equivalence. Students develop equivalence understanding by partitioning numbers into two parts. They explore the commutative property and compensation as they are challenged to find all possible combinations. Each lesson is outlined in detail including curriculum links, vocabulary, materials needed, sample answers, discussion points and student resources. This sequence is part of the reSolve: Maths by Inquiry program.

Educational value
  • This resource is extremely valuable for the year 1 mathematics content description about counting collections to 100 by partitioning numbers. Students use partitioning to explore combinations of colours in collections of ten apples.
  • This resource also offers opportunities to link to the Numeracy General capability, as it provides opportunities for students to model, represent, order and use numbers and also to identify, describe and create everyday patterns.
