This sequence of two lessons explores sorting numbers and place value. In the first lesson students identify the value of digits in a number and also build correct terminology to sort and describe 1-digit, 2-digit and 3-digit numbers. In the second lesson, students are challenged to use Venn diagrams to sort and describe numbers. Each lesson is outlined in detail including curriculum links, vocabulary, materials needed, sample answers, discussion points and student resources such as spreadsheets. This sequence is part of the reSolve: Maths by Inquiry program.

  • This resource is extremely valuable for the year 1 mathematics content description about recognising, modelling, reading, writing and ordering numbers to at least 100. Students use the properties of numbers, including place value, to sort a collection of numbers.
  • This resource also offers opportunities to link to the Numeracy General capability, as it provides opportunities for students to model, represent, order and use numbers and also to identify, describe and create everyday patterns.
