Teacher guide reSolve: Shape: Shadows

This lesson invites students to explore the relationship between three-dimensional objects and common two-dimensional shapes. They are asked to investigate the shape of shadows cast by different three-dimensional objects. They are also asked to consider different perspectives of a single object and how the shadow shapes may vary. The lesson is outlined in detail including curriculum links, vocabulary, materials needed, sample answers, discussion points, extension activities and sample shadows. This sequence is part of the reSolve: Maths by Inquiry program.

  • This resources is extremely valuable for the year 1 mathematics content description about recognising and classifying familiar two-dimensional shapes and three-dimensional objects using obvious features. Students use the shadows of three-dimensional objects to explore features of objects such as faces, edges and corners.
  • The resource is also valuable for supporting the Numeracy general capability. The lesson provides multiple opportunities for students to visualise, identify and sort shapes and objects, describing their key features.
