Teacher guide reSolve: Multiplication: Making Robots

This sequence of lessons introduces the key idea of multiplication as a Cartesian product, using the language of 'for each'. Students explore the total number of different robots that can be made using three heads, three bodies and three feet. The students represent the different combinations for the robots as array. The sequence is outlined in detail including curriculum links, vocabulary, materials needed, discussion points and student resources such as templates and card sets. This sequence is part of the reSolve: Maths by Inquiry program.

Educational value
  • This resource is extremely valuable for the year 2 mathematics content description about recognising and representing multiplication as repeated addition, groups and arrays. Students are engaged in an investigation that draws on understanding that multiplication can be represented as equal groups, repeated addition and also in an array formation.
  • The resource is also valuable for supporting the Numeracy general capability. The lesson provides opportunities for students to model, represent, order and use numbers and also to identify, describe and create everyday patterns.
