Teacher guide reSolve: Place Value Cards

This sequence of two lessons explores the multiplicative place value properties of numbers. Students learn to represent numbers up to 1000 as multiples of 100s, 10s and 1s. Students skip count according to random arrangements of place value cards and explore whether the order of the cards affects the totals. They then use a random place value generator to skip count and apply their place value understanding to rearrange and regroup numbers. Each lesson is outlined in detail including curriculum links, vocabulary, materials needed, sample answers, discussion points and student resources such as slide shows and spreadsheets. This sequence is part of the reSolve: Maths by Inquiry program.

Educational value
  • This resource is extremely valuable for the Number and place value substrand in year 2 mathematics. In particular it relates to the content descriptions about investigating number sequences, modelling and representing numbers to 1000, and grouping, partitioning and rearranging collections up to 1000 in hundreds, tens and ones.
  • The resource is also valuable for supporting the Numeracy general capability. The lesson provides opportunities for students to model, represent, order and use numbers and identify and describe patterns.
