This sequence of two lessons explores the triangle inequality theorem. Students are challenged to construct triangles with a given number of matchsticks, explore and record what combinations of sticks can create valid triangles and represent their findings using mathematical expressions. Each lesson is outlined in detail including curriculum links, vocabulary, materials needed, discussion points and extension activities. This sequence is part of the reSolve: Maths by Inquiry program.

Educational value
  • This resource is extremely valuable for the year 4 mathematics content description about finding unknown quantities in number sentences involving addition and subtraction. Students are engaged in an investigation of the lengths of sides in triangles that involves addition and subtraction and comparing lengths using 'greater than' and 'less than' number sentences.
  • The resource is also valuable for supporting the Numeracy general capability. The lessons provide multiple opportunities for students to visualise, identify and sort shapes and objects and estimating and calculating with whole numbers to solve and model problems.
