Teacher guide reSolve: Mechanical Linkages: Geometry Proofs

TLF ID M021852

This series of six lessons explores geometry proofs using real world contexts focused on the dynamics of linkages and moving joints. Students use physical models and computer simulations, the lessons move from a view of geometry as a study to static diagrams to encompass movement. Each lesson is outlined in detail including curriculum links, vocabulary, materials needed, sample answers, discussion points and student resources such as links for simulations online. This sequence is part of the reSolve: Maths by Inquiry special topic 'Mechanical Linkages and Deductive Geometry'.

Educational details

Educational value
  • This resource is extremely valuable for the year 10 mathematics content descriptions about formulating proofs using triangle and angle properties. Students use their knowledge of angles, triangle properties, similarity and congruence to investigate a range of mechanical linkages.
  • The resource is also valuable for supporting the Numeracy general capability. The lesson provides multiple opportunities for students to visualise, describe and analyse the way shapes and objects are combined and positioned in the environment for different purposes.
  • The resource is also of value for supporting the Information and Communication Technology general capability as students use simulations and digital models to generate data and information to support their understanding of geometry and formalising proofs.
