Teacher guide reSolve: Authentic Problems: Target Ball

TLF ID M024880

This sequence of four lessons explores the relationship between an informal unit of measure and what is being measured using the context of designing a game of 'Target Ball'. Students work in groups to collect data on how far their chose ball rolls, using a cut-out foot as an informal unit of measure. They represent and interpret their data and then work towards using formal units to make their game 'fair'. Each lesson is outlined in detail including curriculum links, vocabulary, materials needed, sample answers, discussion points and student resources. This sequence is part of the reSolve: Maths by Inquiry special topic 'Authentic Problems'.

Educational details

Educational value
  • This resource is valuable for the year 1 mathematics content descriptions about recognising and modelling numbers and measuring lengths using informal units. Throughout the investigation, students are given multiple opportunities to represent and order numbers in different contexts, and to develop their own uniform and informal unit for measuring length.
  • This resource is also of value for both of the content descriptions in the Data representation and interpretation substrand. The inquiry guides students to answer research questions, gather and represent data and make simple inferences.
  • The resource is also valuable for supporting the Numeracy general capability. The unit provides many ways for students to estimate, measure and order using direct and indirect comparisons and informal units.
  • This resource is also of pedagogical value as it supports teachers in building an inquiry-focused learning environment with authentic application of mathematical skills and understandings. The unit uses a learning and teaching model with four phases: Discover, Devise, Develop and Defend. The unit aims to develop content knowledge as well as assisting students to understand the process of inquiry.
