Educational details

Educational value
  • This resource is extremely valuable for the foundation year mathematics content descriptions about establishing the language and processes of counting, connecting number names and numerals, subitising small collections and comparing and ordering collections. Students use a range of different materials to model the authentic problem of how to cater for guests at a tea party. They use familiar counting sequences to solve familiar problems and when sharing their solutions, discuss the reasonableness of the answer in terms of counting.
  • The resource is also valuable for supporting the Numeracy general capability. The tea party context and inquiry provides multiple opportunities for students to connect and order number names, numerals and groups of objects using numbers up to two digits.
  • This resource is also of pedagogical value as it supports teachers in building an inquiry-focused learning environment with authentic application of mathematical skills and understandings. The unit uses a learning and teaching model with four phases: Discover, Devise, Develop and Defend. The unit aims to develop content knowledge as well as assisting students to understand the process of inquiry.
