Teacher guide reSolve: Modelling Motion - Year 7

TLF ID M025029

This sequence of seven lessons challenges students to use simple equipment to predict, observe and represent motion. They create a series of graphs to represent motion and construct instruments to measure forces in one and then two dimensions. They interpret these representations to develop concepts of force and motion. Each lesson is outlined in detail including curriculum links, vocabulary, materials needed, sample answers, discussion points and student resources. This sequence is part of the reSolve: Maths by Inquiry program.

Educational details

Educational value
  • This resource is extremely valuable for the year 7 mathematics substrand about data representation and interpretation. It also supports the content description focussed on investigating, interpreting and analysing graphs from authentic data. Students engage in a range of activities involving collecting and interpreting their own real world data related to speed and forces.
  • The resource also supports the year 7 Science content description about motion and forces, and content descriptions under the Science Inquiry skills strand; as the unit challenges students to plan, conduct and evaluate their own motion and forces experiments.
  • This resource also offers opportunities to link to the Numeracy General capability, as it engages students in comparing, interpreting and assessing the effectiveness of different data displays.
  • This resource is of pedagogical value as it supports teachers in building an inquiry-focused learning environment with authentic application of mathematical skills and understandings. The unit aims to develop content knowledge as well as assisting students to understand the process of inquiry.
