Teacher guide TrackSAFE Education Primary School Resources: Foundation, Year 1 and Year 2 English

TLF ID M025085

This unit of work focuses on developing student understanding of the importance of being track safe and the key message 'Stop, Look, Listen, Think'. It builds students' familiarity with the vocabulary and key concepts related to rail safety and provides differentiated activities for writers at different stages of development from beginning or emergent level writers to fluent writers. Lessons guide students to engage with track safety concepts as they collaboratively draft, edit and publish information texts. The activities have a strong emphasis on text structure and encourage the use of a wide range of online tools to write, edit and publish student writing. The unit also provides advice on assessment against the learning intent and outcomes.

Educational details

Educational value
  • This is a highly useful resource for the Foundation and years 1 and 2 English curriculum as it relates to fifteen content descriptions across these year levels. It is particularly relevant for the content descriptions that refer to understanding that texts can take different forms or structures and that this helps the text serve its purpose. Lesson 2 engages students in creating an informative text and asks students to consider the audience and purpose of their text, then consequently what structure it should take to best suit these purposes.
  • The resource is also highly relevant for the Foundation and years 1 and 2 English content descriptions about creating informative and persuasive texts using knowledge of text structures and language features for familiar and some less familiar audiences. In Lessons 3 and 5 of the resource students create an informative text for a specific audience focused on being safe around the rail network.
  • The learning experiences within the resource are designed sequentially to enable students to develop skills in producing informative texts, creating and delivering oral presentations and using interactions to question, disagree and give feedback as well providing messages about rail safety.
  • This resource is extremely valuable for supporting the Victorian Curriculum for Foundation and years 1 and 2 English, particularly content descriptions within the Language and Literacy strands. Students are engaged in creating texts including using software and online tools to incoporate symbols, images and sounds, re-reading and editing their own texts, and learning to read and write new words from the TrackSAFE vocabulary.
