Teacher guide TrackSAFE Education Primary School Resources: Year 5, Year 6 Health & Physical Education

TLF ID M025090

In this unit, students work collaboratively to develop definitions of the word 'safe' and apply their understanding by identifying strategies and design solutions to enhance safety and bring attention to the negative influences that impact young people's safety around train tracks, stations and platforms. They use popular media campaigns as a stimulus to create their own media messages and debate track safety issues. The unit culminates with a focus on addressing challenges and strategies to improve safety for themselves and others.

Educational details

Educational value
  • This is a highly useful resource for years 5 and 6 Health and Physical Education curriculum. It is particularly relevant for the content description that refers to planning and practising strategies to promote health, safety and wellbeing. Lesson 1 involves students in exploring the meaning  of the word 'safe'; they then identify hazards around a pedestrian level crossing and compile a pocket sized list of 'safe paths', create a keeping safe strategy for stick figures on station platforms, or design an island train network identifying their safety features. In lesson 3 they examine a current rail safety advertisement and engage in creating a comprehensive targeted safety campaign for a specific audience.
  • The resource is also very useful for the content descriptions about practise skills to establish and manage relationships and examining the influence of emotional responses on behaviour. Lesson 2 of the resource is very useful for these content descriptions. Students examine the power of their inner voices, including self-talk strategies for keeping themselves safe; they then investigate the relationship between emotions and risk-taking behaviours and how that can result in unsafe actions.
  • The learning experiences within the resource are designed sequentially to enable students to build on and demonstrate their knowledge, skills and understanding of safety actions needed to stay safe in the community and in road environments when near train tracks.
  • This resource is also extremely valuable for supporting the Victorian Curriculum for years 5 and 6 Health and Physical Education, particularly content descriptions within the Personal, Social and Community Health strands. Students are engaged in describing and applying safe strategies around rail locations and in promoting rail safety messages in their school or community.
