TrackSAFE Education Primary School Resources: Year 3, Year 4 The Arts

• This is a highly useful resource for The Arts curriculum in years 3 and 4. It is particularly useful for the Visual Arts, Music and Drama curricula. It is relevant for the Visual Arts content descriptions about: exploring ideas, experiences, observations and imagination to create visual artworks and design; and presenting artworks and describing how they have used visual conventions to represent their ideas. Lesson 1 of the resource engages students in exploring the way woven fibre artists represent ideas visually; creating a woven artwork with a safety message and examining how the purpose of their artwork will influence where it is displayed.
• The resource is also very useful for the content descriptions referring to: exploring ideas and narrative structures through roles and situations and using empathy in their own devised drama; and performing dramatic action using narrative structures and tension in devised and scripted drama. Lesson 2 of the resource engages students in sharing a real or imagined example of a time they could have paused an unsafe situation and turn it into a positive outcome. They then work in groups create a mini-play that promotes safe behaviours when near train tracks.
• The resource is also useful for the content descriptions about identifying intended purposes and meanings as they listen to music using the elements of music to make comparison; and creating, performing and recording compositions by selecting and organising sounds, silence, tempo and volume. In lesson 3, students explore rap music and identify its musical elements. They brainstorm and create rhyming couplets and create lyrics for a rap with a message about safety near train tracks.
• The resource is also of some use for The Arts Dance curriculum in years 3 and 4. In lesson 3, students are encouraged to choreograph a dance to accompany their rap, and perform this to a local community audience.
• The learning experiences within the resource are designed sequentially to enable students to explore, build on and demonstrate their knowledge of about being safe near trains and tracks, through Visual Arts, Music and Drama.
• This resource is also extremely valuable for supporting the Victorian Curriculum for The Arts in years 3 and 4, it addresses content descriptions within the Visual Arts, Music and Drama curricula. Students explore woven art, using this medium to express a safety message, they use dramatic techniques to examine how to change unsafe into safe behaviours and use rap music and dance to express their safety ideas to a broader audience.
