# reSolve: Multiplication - Domino Arrays

TLF ID M025299

This sequence of two lessons explores multiplicative thinking through the use of arrays where all the parts of the array are not visible. The sequence encourages students to find the total number of items in an array by multiplication rather than counting by ones or skip counting. Connections between area, arrays and multiplication is also made. Each lesson is outlined in detail including curriculum links, vocabulary, materials needed, sample answers, discussion points and student resources. This sequence is part of the reSolve: Maths by Inquiry program.

#### Educational details

Educational value
• This resource is extremely valuable for the year 3 mathematics content description about recalling multiplication facts of two, three, five and ten and related division facts. Students use their knowledge of multiplication up to 10 times 10 to explore different arrays of dominoes over a given area. This reinforces the connection between area, arrays and multiplication.
• This resource is extremely valuable for the year 3 mathematics content description about solving problems involving multiplication using efficient mental and written strategies. Student use a variety of multiplication and division strategies to explain why different arrangements of dominoes cover a given area using the same number of dominoes and why some areas cannot be covered evenly.
• The resource is of value for supporting the Numeracy general capability. The lesson provides multiple opportunities for students to identify, describe and create everyday patterns and use these patterns to model multiplication and addition to help them solve simple problems.
• This resource is also of pedagogical value as it supports teachers in building an inquiry-focused learning environment with authentic application of mathematical skills and understandings. The unit aims to develop content knowledge as well as assisting students to understand the process of inquiry.
