Teacher guide reSolve: Statistics - Shoes

This lesson engages students in gathering and representing data on the shoes that students wear to school. Students work together as a class to sort their shoes into different categories of their choosing. They organise and represent their data using a picture graph, then use the graph to answer questions and make simple inferences. The lesson is outlined in detail including vocabulary, curriculum links, discussion points, student materials and further activities. This sequence is part of the reSolve: Maths by Inquiry program.

Educational value
  • This resource is extremely valuable for the Foundation year mathematics content description about sorting and classifying familiar objects and explaining the basis for their classifications. Students are challenged to sort the shoes in their classroom in different ways, explain their sorting and agree on a sorting that they can investigate.
  • This resource is valuable for supporting the Statistics and Probability strand of Foundation year mathematics. It relates to the content description about answering yes/no questions to collect information and make simple inferences. There are various yes/no questions suggested for the activity where students are asked to decide on categories for their shoes. They then go on to make simple inferences based on their classifications.
  • This resource also offers opportunities to link to the Numeracy General capability, as it engages students in asking and answering simple data questions and interpreting data in drawings and picture graphs.
  • This resource is also of pedagogical value as it supports teachers in building an inquiry-focused learning environment with authentic application of mathematical skills and understandings. The unit aims to develop content knowledge as well as assisting students to understand the process of inquiry.
