Teacher guide reSolve: Statistics - Planning Playgrounds

TLF ID M025303

This sequence of four lessons engages students in sorting, classifying, representing and interpreting data in order to plan a playground for their school or community. Students choose simple questions for a survey, gather responses and make simple inferences from their data. They then create picture graphs and explore how the data varies between the different categories. Students then go on to use the data to make decisions about what makes the ideal playground. The lesson is outlined in detail including vocabulary, curriculum links, discussion points, printable cards and further activities. This sequence is part of the reSolve: Maths by Inquiry program.

Educational value
  • This resource is extremely valuable for the year 1 mathematics content description about choosing simple questions, gathering responses and making simple inferences. The sequence offers multiple opportunities for students to determine good questions, ask others in their own class and in other classes, gather responses and collate the responses for further consideration.
  • This resource is also very valuable for the year 1 mathematics content description about representing data with objects and drawings where one object or drawing represents one data value. During the sequence, students use a variety of one-to-one objects and drawings, including pictures of playground equipment and student faces, unifix cubes and a set of colours to represent their playground data.
  • This resource also offers opportunities to link to the Numeracy General capability, as it engages students in asking and answering simple data questions and interpreting data in drawings and picture graphs.
  • This resource is also of pedagogical value as it supports teachers in building an inquiry-focused learning environment with authentic application of mathematical skills and understandings. The unit aims to develop content knowledge as well as assisting students to understand the process of inquiry.
