In this lesson, students examine sporting scores and explore the concept of the average of a set of scores. Students collect sporting scores from real and hypothetical games, use blocks to visualise an even distribution of scores across matches and then explore how to calculate the average of a set of scores. The lesson is outlined in detail including curriculum links, vocabulary, materials needed, sample answers, discussion points and student resources. This sequence is part of the reSolve: Maths by Inquiry program.

  • This resource is of some value for the year 4 mathematics content description about selecting and trialling methods for data collection, including survey questions and recording sheets. The last activity of the lesson challenges students to collect their own data regarding a sport they play or watch, which would give them a chance to compare different methods of data collection.
  • This resource is also valuable for the year 4 mathematics content description about constructing suitable data displays, from given or collected data, including tables, column graphs and picture graphs. During the lesson, students construct and interpret various simple tables and column graphs related to different sporting scores.
