This sequence is part of the reSolve: Maths by Inquiry program.

#### Educational details

Educational value
• This resource is of some value for the year 4 mathematics content description about selecting and trialling methods for data collection, including survey questions and recording sheets. The last activity of the lesson challenges students to collect their own data regarding a sport they play or watch, which would give them a chance to compare different methods of data collection.
• This resource is also valuable for the year 4 mathematics content description about constructing suitable data displays, from given or collected data, including tables, column graphs and picture graphs. During the lesson, students construct and interpret various simple tables and column graphs related to different sporting scores.
• This resource also offers opportunities to link to the Numeracy General capability, as it engages students in asking and answering simple data questions and interpreting data in drawings and picture graphs.
• This resource is also of pedagogical value as it supports teachers in building an inquiry-focused learning environment with authentic application of mathematical skills and understandings. The unit aims to develop content knowledge as well as assisting students to understand the process of inquiry.
